Afraid of the phone? I will tell you the secret upfront so you are prepared. I remember when my old mentor used to tell us to do self-talk. For a long time, I didn’t understand how to do it or what exactly that was. Until later.
Today I can talk to you about this because I’m supposed to call prospects. And this is the moment that it finally clicks.
If you’re working from home indirect marketing or network marketing, you already know the truth: you’ve got to make the calls. but I got some skills and you don’t have to be afraid of the phone.
When the Competition is You
Self-talk is when you tell yourself things over and over. The purpose of self-talk is to reject all the negative stuff coming your way.
I believe it’s a powerful thing because it shows that the only person you’re competing against is yourself.
Not your upline. Not the top earner. Not the person who joined after you and is already crushing it. Just you versus you.
You’re Not Alone in This Fear
Here’s what I’ve learned: many people are like me, afraid of the phone. Why? There’s a valid reason. We’re wired like that. It’s not an excuse, and I’m not saying we shouldn’t make the calls.
If we want to make it in this industry, we absolutely have to do it. The calls are part of the business. But how? How do we get over the fear of making these calls? Here’s the reality check: this industry didn’t ask if we had the skills to do this before we joined.
We knew what we wanted "Financial Freedom" so we jumped in. Now we're here, staring at that phone that somehow weighs 100 pounds.
The Secret is: Don’t have an agenda
📝
What does that mean? Don’t get attached to the results. Focus on the action with a servant heart. Be there in the moment, help the person in need and don’t sell them anything.
When we came into this industry, we figured out quickly it’s going to be a selling and recruiting business. Our mentor taught us the opposite, because he figured something out:
It’s a relationship business, not a numbers game! This gives me the chills.
Sure, when you go through the numbers, you’ll get some results. You’ve heard about the 6-7 percent conversion rate, right? But here’s what most people miss: the approach you take will give you better results.
That 6-7 percent you could achieve when you change how you do it.
The retention is greater when you don’t have an agenda. You just listen to your prospect and try to help them before you even mention any sales conversation.
When You learn to Listen

My mentor had a system that attracted leads. He targeted frustrated distributors, people who were already in the game but struggling. This post is proof that I understood the message, and it’s helping me get rid of all the negative stuff trying to stop me.
In a couple of minutes, I’ll be making these calls. But I’m not going in to sell. I’m going in to help people by listening. Listening. That’s the way to go.
Detach from the Outcome
I’ve had calls where people are clearly in need, but it’s fear that stops them from taking the next step. When they take that step, they did it with fear. That fear is then translated into everything else. For example,
They fear because they don’t HAVE this or that. They fear because they WANT this or that. etc… That’s where we fail as an industry. We came in with fear. We’ll stay in with that fear. Unless… you decide to make it stop.
Yes, we want to bring people in., But the what ifs? Just detach from the outcome and you'll be Free from FEAR.
Self-Talk Formula And Beyond
When those thoughts come to you: STOP. When you think you can’t do it: STOP. When the phone weighs 100 pounds: STOP. It doesn’t actually weigh 100 pounds. You know what I mean? Here’s the self-talk I use before making calls:
| I’m calling to serve, | not to sell. |
| This person needs help, | I might have the solution. |
| The worst thing that happens is they say no. | I’m still the same person after. |
| I’m building relationships, | Not chasing the next sale |
| My value doesn’t depend on this one call, | not chasing numbers. |
| I came in with fear, | but I don’t have to stay with it. |
The point is that self talk has to do with a battle that is going on in your head. Be positive and detach from the outcome, it will save you from the scarcity mindset. The one that says I need, I want, I everything.
No more getting Stuck
👩🎓🤳👨🎓
It’s these struggles that help us get better at what we do. The fear doesn’t just disappear. The phone doesn’t suddenly become lighter. The butterflies in your stomach don’t magically vanish. But you learn to move forward anyway.
You learn to pick up that phone even when your hands are shaking. You learn to dial even when that voice in your head is screaming at you to stop.
Five in one Challenge
Don’t let anything stop you from getting things done. Not fear. Not past rejections. Not the weight of that phone. Before your next call, try this:
- Take three deep breaths
- Say out loud: “I’m here to listen and help”
- Remember you’re building a relationship, not chasing sales
- Dial the number before you can talk yourself out of it
- Lead with curiosity, not a pitch
The person on the other end is just another human being. They might be sitting there with their own fears, their own struggles, their own 100-pound phone. And maybe, just maybe, you’re the person who finally listens.
Final Thought
Self-talk isn’t about lying to yourself., but know this. Fear isn’t real. Your action of refusing to let fear have the final say it’s your choice. The competition is within yourself, yesterday’s version versus today’s version. And today’s version? That version makes the calls.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some calls to make. And I’m going in with one mission: to listen.
I’d love to hear your story and what self-talk works for you.
Need a system to help you move forward go here.
