Lack of Good Sleep Has Impacts

Why so much attention to getting a good night sleep for boomer-seniors? Because lack of good sleep has many daytime impacts and if left unaddressed can lead to long term issues. For example, according to the National Institute on Aging(NIA), the four most common sleep-deprivation issues are:

  • Being irritable
  • Becoming forgetful
  • Feeling depressed
  • Having more falls or accidents

Even one of these is enough to harm us and those around us. Boomer-seniors should feel like we are in our great years, when we have the time and freedom to enjoy our days. Being depressed or irritable can make it hard to get through the day. Being more prone to accidents and falls can land us in the ER. I know, because it has happened to me. What is important is consistent, deep sleep that allows enough time to cycle into deep REM sleep. It is the REM Sleep, experts say, that is essential for cognitive functions including memory, creativity, and learning. When we constantly wake up and have to fall asleep all over again, or when we have light sleep that never really cycles into REM, we lose the advantage of that most important part of our sleep cycles. That’s worrisome, because REM only makes up about 25% of our sleep as it is, and when we cut it short we may end up with virtually no important REM.

I used to suffer from poor sleep. Then, I used to go to bed at different times and set the alarm for different wake-up times. Now I focus on getting a great night’s sleep! Consistency is important, so is using your bedroom only for sleep whenever possible, not as an office or TV room! It should only take about 20 minutes to fall asleep.
