HOME SCHOOL PROGRAM TEACHERS

At Brainfood Academy, home school teachers are experts and are treated as such.  What does it mean to be an expert teacher and why is this so important?  Why is this better than traditional home schooling?

Expert Teacher

I turned to research on the subject to learn that an expert teacher is:

teachers
  • Great at presenting ideas in various ways, not just one way.  Too often, teachers in traditional schools have one way to present something that can be challenging for students to comprehend.  Parents in home schooling programs can have the same problem. And, the teachers have difficulty thinking on his/her feet to come up with a different variation to help the students.  What they need to think and convey is “it could be like this, or it could be like that.”  Yes, it is that ability to present different versions of the same idea that distinguishes a master teacher from others.
  • An expert teacher is flexible.  Yes, there is the lesson plan, but the lesson plan wasn’t writ on a table that Moses took down from the mountain.  But, the lesson plan is a guide, not an absolute.
  • A great expert teacher knows how to really listen.  In fact, some people call it deep listening, where the person stops their own thought process to focus intensely on what the student asks or says.  So, it isn’t the “I’ll get to that in a moment,” response. It is the
“let’s hear this and understand it fully.”  Truly, only through deep listening can the teacher really respond to the student.

  • A great teacher focuses on students doing their own thinking rather than learning by rote.  After all, the point of education is to teach critical thinking, to encourage students to explore ideas.  So, the student is actively learning, all the time, engaged in working through things on her/his own.
  • A terrific teacher is in love with learning, and exhibits it herself.  There is nothing better than a teacher coming into a work session with students and saying, “Guess what I just learned!”  And, letting students get excited about that learning and discovery.
  • A great teacher loves to encourage problem solving, often by presenting questions that can be solved either at an easy level or a very high level so that all the students in a clas, at their various learning levels, can participate in solving the problem.

This is what makes Brainfood Academy so exciting.  Expert teachers are the backbone of Brainfood Academy, and they know how to employ these deep skills.  It isn’t just the subject matter that is taught.  It is the way things are taught that matters most.  That’s why Brainfood Academy allows for flexibility in who teaches what student.  If a learning style doesn’t match up, a different instructor with a different presenting style can take over.  You will NEVER find that in a typical school.

Use this list to measure the teaching approach your student is currently receiving at their existing school, an then ask yourself if there is merit in these as a basis for making a leap to Brainfood Academy.  After, we are feeding brains, not teaching rote. Flexible, critical thinking is the way of the future, the way of future leaders. And it is available, here, now.
